About This Day Trips

Kaunos is one of the most significant archaeological sites on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, yet it remains surprisingly uncrowded. Founded around the 9th century BC, this ancient Carian and Lycian city features a remarkably preserved theatre with seating for 5,000 spectators, Roman baths with intricate mosaic floors, a Byzantine basilica, and the famous cliff tombs that have become the symbol of Dalyan. Your expert guide brings the ancient world to life with stories of Persian satraps, Hellenistic traders and Roman administrators who once ruled this strategic port city. The walk up to the acropolis offers panoramic views across the Dalyan delta to Iztuzu Beach and the Mediterranean beyond. A must-do for history lovers and anyone wanting to understand the deep cultural layers of this region.

As a history teacher, I was blown away by the quality of the guide and the preservation of the site. The theatre acoustics are incredible — our guide demonstrated from the stage. The mosaics in the baths are world-class. Far better value than crowded Ephesus.

Dit was het hoogtepunt van onze vakantie. De gids wist zoveel en kon het zo levendig vertellen. De tombs zijn indrukwekkend van dichtbij. Het uitzicht vanaf de acropolis is adembenemend. Een must-do!

Very informative tour. The walk up to the acropolis is steep but worth it for the views. Lunch at the riverside restaurant was lovely — try the sea bass. Our only suggestion is to bring more water than you think you need in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a walking-intensive tour covering approximately 3km over uneven ancient stone surfaces with some uphill sections to the acropolis. A moderate fitness level is required. The theatre and baths are accessible with minimal climbing. Please wear sturdy walking shoes — sandals are not recommended.
