Ephesus is the best-preserved ancient city in the Mediterranean world — and arguably the most impressive archaeological site in Turkey. Walking the marble-paved streets that Roman emperors, early Christians and traders once walked, past intact temples, baths, fountains and the jaw-dropping Library of Celsus, is a genuinely humbling experience.

From Marmaris, it\'s a day trip requiring an early start — but the scale and quality of what you see makes the long journey worthwhile for most visitors.

Quick tip: Bring comfortable shoes

The site involves extensive walking on uneven marble and cobblestone surfaces. Sandals or flip-flops are a mistake. Wear proper walking shoes, bring more water than you think you need, and consider a hat — the site is very exposed and gets hot.

What you\'ll see on a full Ephesus day trip

1

Library of Celsus

The iconic two-storey Roman library facade. One of the most recognisable ancient buildings in the world. Built in 117 AD, it holds the tomb of Celsus beneath its floor.

2

The Great Theatre

A 25,000-seat theatre carved into the hillside that still hosts concerts today. St Paul reportedly preached here, provoking a riot mentioned in the Bible.

3

Terrace Houses

Separate ticket required (£8), but worth it — preserved Roman villas showing how wealthy Ephesians lived, with intact frescoes and mosaic floors under a climate-controlled shelter.

4

Curetes Street

The main marble-paved street linking the Library to the theatre, flanked by columns, statues and the remains of temples, fountains and baths.

5

Temple of Hadrian

A strikingly well-preserved temple with intricate decorative frieze panels depicting mythological scenes.

6

Marble Road

The ancient road lined with ruts from chariot wheels, brothel engravings, and marble pavements — remarkably intact after 2,000 years.

Great information, really helped us decide between different options. The price comparisons were super useful. Only wish there were a few more photos to visualise everything better!
