The Most Popular Day Trip from Marmaris
The Cleopatra Island boat trip is consistently rated the most popular day excursion from Marmaris. The draw is simple: a legendary beach with genuinely unusual golden sand, crystal-clear shallow water, ancient ruins, and a boat journey through some of the finest coastal scenery in Turkey.
The island is officially called Sedir Island (Sedir Adası) and sits in the Gulf of Gökova, about 35km north of Marmaris. Access is controlled by a permit system to protect the natural environment — which is actually a good thing, as it limits overcrowding significantly.
According to local legend, the Egyptian queen Cleopatra ordered Mark Antony to import sand from Egypt to create this beach for her. Whether historically accurate or not, the sand is genuinely unlike any other on the Turkish coast — coarser, more golden, and oddly satisfying underfoot.
Four things that make it stand out from other day trips
Cleopatra's sand is genuinely different — coarser, golden, and according to geologists, not native to Turkey. Legend says Mark Antony imported Egyptian sand as a gift for the queen.
The water around Cleopatra Island has exceptional clarity — you can see the sandy bottom at 5 metres. One of the most photographable swim spots in the Mediterranean.
A small ancient theatre and walls from the city of Cedrae are visible on the island. History and beach in one place.
Snorkelling around the island rocks reveals sea turtles, octopus, parrotfish and colourful reef fish. Bring or rent snorkel equipment.
What a typical Cleopatra Island day trip looks like
Boat leaves the marina and heads north along the pine-covered coastline.
Anchor in a beautiful transparent bay. 45-minute swim and snorkel stop before the crowds arrive.
Dock at the famous island. Queue to enter the beach (permit system — your guide handles this).
2 hours on the legendary golden sand beach. Swim, sunbathe, explore. Bar/café on the island.
Turkish lunch served on deck — typically rice, salad, bread, fruit and a main dish. Soft drinks included.
Second transparent-water bay for a relaxed afternoon swim. Snorkelling equipment available.
Most trips offer optional water sports at this stop for an extra charge (£10–20).
Scenic cruise back along the coast, arriving marina approx. 18:30.
Add the Cleopatra Island trip to your list — you won\'t regret it
