Dental Emergency? Act Now

If you have rapid facial swelling, difficulty swallowing, high fever, or severe uncontrolled pain — this is a dental emergency. Call NHS 111 immediately or go to A&E. Do not wait.

Most Turkey dental work goes well. But when it goes wrong, it can go very wrong — and knowing exactly what to do (and in what order) can save your teeth, your health, and thousands of pounds.

This guide is for British patients who are experiencing problems with dental work done in Turkey — whether that's veneers that look wrong, crowns that are causing pain, or implants that are failing. We cover every scenario: from minor aesthetic issues you can fix cheaply, to serious complications that need urgent UK treatment.

We also cover how to avoid these problems in the first place — because the best rescue is the one you never need.

Warning Signs: Is Your Turkey Dental Work Failing?

Not all problems are equal. Use this guide to assess the urgency of your situation.

Emergency — A&E / NHS 111 now
Urgent — dentist within 48h
Moderate — book within 2 weeks
Low — aesthetic, not urgent
Persistent sensitivity or pain

Sharp pain when eating or drinking hot/cold may indicate nerve damage from over-drilling. See a dentist within 48 hours.

Urgent
Gum bleeding or swelling

Persistent bleeding or swollen gums around veneer margins suggests poor fit allowing bacteria to enter. Needs prompt treatment.

Urgent
Veneers look "like a block"

Bulky, unnatural appearance — often from over-preparation or wrong shade selection. Aesthetic issue, not urgent but correctable.

Moderate
Dark line at gumline

A dark shadow at the gum margin indicates poor fit or the wrong type of crown. Correctable but needs attention.

Moderate
Movement or clicking

Any movement in a veneer or crown means the bond has failed. Risk of swallowing or inhaling the veneer. See a dentist immediately.

Urgent
Chipped or cracked within 1 year

Quality E-Max veneers should not chip within the first year. This suggests inferior materials or poor bonding technique.

Moderate
Wrong shade (too white)

The classic "Turkey teeth" look — unnaturally white veneers. Aesthetic only, but can be corrected by replacing with a more natural shade.

Low
Uneven or misaligned

Veneers that don't follow your natural smile line. Aesthetic issue — correctable by a skilled cosmetic dentist.

What to Do Right Now — Step by Step

1

Assess the urgency

Use the warning signs above. If you have swelling, fever, or severe pain — stop reading and call NHS 111 now. If it's aesthetic or mild discomfort, you have time to plan.

2

Document everything

Take clear photos of the problem from multiple angles. Write down your symptoms, when they started, and how they've changed. Gather all your Turkish clinic records, X-rays, receipts and written communications.

3

Contact your Turkish clinic

Do this even if you're angry. Most reputable clinics have WhatsApp support and will respond quickly. Send your photos and describe the problem. Their response (or lack of it) tells you a lot about how they'll handle it.

4

Get a UK assessment

See a UK dentist for an independent assessment — ideally a specialist in restorative or revision dentistry. Don't agree to any major corrective work until you have a clear diagnosis and a second opinion.

5

Understand your options

You have four main paths: return to Turkey for correction, UK revision specialist, NHS emergency treatment, or dental school. The right choice depends on the severity and type of problem.

6

Check your insurance and payment method

If you paid by UK credit card (over £100), Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act may protect you. Check your travel insurance for dental complication cover. Keep all receipts.

Real Patient Cases — What Went Wrong & How They Fixed It

Claire B. · Leeds
8 veneers in Istanbul
Resolved ✓
Problem
Over-drilled teeth, severe sensitivity
Solution
Root canal on 3 teeth + new crowns
Correction Cost
£4,200
Their advice

“The clinic prepared my teeth too aggressively. I had severe sensitivity for months. I needed root canals on 3 teeth before new crowns could be fitted. Always ask your Turkish clinic how much enamel they plan to remove.”

Mark T. · Birmingham
12 veneers in Antalya
Resolved ✓
Problem
Wrong shade — unnaturally white
Solution
Returned to Turkey, replaced with A2 shade
Correction Cost
£0 (clinic guarantee)
Their advice

“My veneers were B1 shade — way too white. I looked like I had a mouth full of Tic Tacs. The clinic replaced them under guarantee when I returned. Lesson: always specify A2 or A3 shade, never let the clinic choose.”

Rachel S. · London
Single implant in Bodrum
Resolved ✓
Problem
Failed implant, peri-implantitis
Solution
Implant removed, bone graft, new implant
Correction Cost
£6,800
Their advice

“My implant failed after 8 months — it started moving and I had a foul taste. I needed the implant removed, a bone graft, and a 6-month wait before a new implant could be placed. The original implant cost £800. The fix cost £6,800. Research your clinic thoroughly.”

How to Avoid Turkey Teeth Going Wrong

The best rescue is the one you never need. Here's what separates successful Turkey dental trips from disasters.

Research the clinic thoroughly

Check Google Maps reviews independently. Look for ISO 9001 certification. Verify the dentist's qualifications. Avoid clinics with only website testimonials.

Demand a Digital Smile Design preview

Never allow tooth preparation to begin without seeing a digital preview of your final result. This is standard at reputable clinics.

Never rush the process

Porcelain veneers cannot be done in 2–3 days. Lab fabrication takes 3–5 days minimum. Any clinic promising faster is cutting corners.

Get everything in writing

Treatment plan, materials used (brand names), shade selected, and a written guarantee of 2–5 years. If they won't put it in writing, walk away.

Specify your shade carefully

Always request A2 or A3 shade for natural results. Never let the clinic choose. B1 or "Hollywood white" looks unnatural on most people.

Pay by UK credit card

Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act protects purchases over £100 made by UK credit card. This gives you a route to claim if things go wrong.

Get travel insurance with dental cover

Standard travel insurance often excludes dental complications. Look for policies that specifically cover dental treatment complications abroad.

Ask how much enamel will be removed

For veneers, ask specifically how much enamel will be removed. Minimal-prep or no-prep options exist. Over-preparation is the most common cause of sensitivity.
