Best Hammams, Prices, Etiquette & What to Expect
A Turkish bath — or hammam — is one of the most genuinely memorable experiences of any Marmaris holiday. It\'s not a luxury hotel spa experience. It\'s a 600-year-old ritual combining warmth, scrubbing, soap and relaxation that leaves you feeling completely renewed.
Virtually everyone who visits a hammam in Marmaris says the same thing afterwards: "I was nervous beforehand and loved it." If you\'re visiting Turkey and skip the hammam, you\'re missing one of its most distinctive cultural experiences.
Absolutely. A traditional hammam costs less than a mediocre hotel massage and delivers a fundamentally different experience. Your skin will feel extraordinary for days afterwards, and you\'ll leave with a genuine insight into one of Turkey\'s most important cultural traditions.
Step-by-step — so you know exactly what to expect
You're given a pestemal (thin cotton wrap). Men keep it wrapped around their waist, women cover as much or as little as comfortable. Valuables go in a locker.
You lie on the warm marble central slab (göbek taşı — literally "navel stone") which has been heated from below. This phase lasts 15–20 minutes and opens your pores.
The tellak (attendant) uses a rough kese mitt to scrub your entire body. Dead skin rolls off in a quite spectacular — and initially surprising — fashion.
A large pillow of thick soapy foam is worked across your body in long strokes. This is the most relaxing phase. Many visitors describe it as the best massage of their lives.
Optional shampoo and hair wash. Usually included in premium packages, extra in basic packages.
Bucket or shower rinse with cooling water. Then wrapped in fresh towels and guided to a cool room to rest and drink tea. Your skin will feel extraordinary.
Four top picks for every type of visitor
The most authentic hammam experience in Marmaris. Located away from the tourist strip in Armutalan, this is where locals actually go — and where savvy visitors end up after a recommendation.
Centrally located near the old bazaar, this well-established hammam has been welcoming tourists for over 20 years. Staff speak English and are experienced in putting first-timers at ease.
For visitors who want the hammam ritual in a contemporary spa environment with private rooms and full massage services. More expensive, but the premium facilities justify the price.
A small, family-run hammam in İçmeler that offers excellent value and a genuinely warm welcome. Great choice for guests staying in İçmeler who want to avoid the taxi ride into Marmaris centre.

Brilliant article — very detailed and up to date for 2026. Bookmarked it for our summer holiday planning. Exactly the kind of honest, practical information I was looking for.
Great information, really helped us decide between different options. The price comparisons were super useful. Only wish there were a few more photos to visualise everything better!
